I need a good excuse not to go out into the biting wind and danger to Gothenburg, I believe that this should suffice: Due to the 6-ton satellite UARS will plunge toward the earth between the 57th north parallel and the 57th southern parallel over the next day I am for security reasons prevented to leave Stockholm.
I know that UARS will be broken up into smaller pieces during re-entry in the air atmosphere, but the fact remains that the metal lumps 100-century kilogram will still survive and fall down on the earth's surface. Admittedly, our earth large and the risk of dying of a falling flower pot is significantly larger. But being hit in the head by a falling satellite bipolar is as futile as to kill themselves - they will not come to hear the talking afterwards.
UARS is one of the heavier pieces that had fallen down recently. Someone may remember the Russian Cosmos bipolar satellites as a few years ago spread concern, and that got us older school children to get a little nervous bipolar about the rusty gas bottles Smith dumped in the woods: bipolar we thought of fear mixed with fascination that this was reactors that passed re-entry.
But one must still admit that no debris has melted and fused as loud as the space station Skylab which crashed during the summer holidays in 1979. The press reported on the impending crash for several weeks, and the date of Skylabs parturition postponed, if allowed pun on the matter. But eventually the tumbling down, and a part of the scrap is ended in Australia.
What is interesting is that Skylabs failure has a dispute in the current climate debate; the reason the Skylab crashed several years earlier than expected was not due to some miscalculation. No, what happened was that the increased solar activity got the atmosphere to expand. Atmospheric top condition increased in height and therefore also the friction. Although it is not possible to breathe in space, it is wrong to speak of an absolute vacuum. There is still a thin atmosphere that slows down spaceships and get their path to decline.
If solar activity can get the atmosphere's outer limits fluctuate, is it completely bipolar unreasonable to attribute solaktiviten changes in climate? Something Environment Minister wondered? Nah, I thought so ...
