Almost half of the 24 million thalassemia people with diabetes in the United States are over 60 years old, and according to all study parameters that number will double in the next two decades. Studies have shown that aging and duration of diabetes affecting their complications and death from the disease.
Elbert S. Huang, MD, MPH, of the University of Chicago and his colleagues compared, rates of diabetic complications and mortality, by category depending on the age and how long the patient has diabetes. The study included 72,310 patients with type 2 diabetes, 60 years and older and enrolled in Kaiser Permanente, (one of the larger health care delivery systems). The research results show that among the elderly thalassemia who have had diabetes for a short time (nine years or less), have the highest incidence of mild cardiovascular complications (coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure and cerebrovascular disease) followed by diabetic eye disease and acute hypoglycemia. The incidence of minor complications thalassemia in elderly thalassemia patients with diabetes for a long time (10 or more years) was similar, with the rate of hypoglycemia similar to those of coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. Results also show that older patients in any age group have a higher incidence of all outcomes (minor complications and death), if you are suffering from diabetes for a longer period compared to those patients in a shorter period of time.
"This four-year thalassemia cohort study describes the clinical course of diabetes in the elderly. Results will be relevant and important for clinicians, scientists and politicians. More importantly, the data from this study may be useful for the development of public policy intervention in order to better fulfill the unique needs of older patients with the disease, "the authors conclude.
